Box Office: "Argo" Tops Newcomers to Start Slow Cinema Weekend

Making a surprise move from runner-up to the pole position, "Argo" finds itself atop the pack at the box office to kick off the dismal weekend of October 26-28, 2012 .

The Ben Affleck starring/directed thriller - which is about Tony Mendez's account of the rescue of six U.S. diplomats during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis - garnered estimated sales of $3.9 million on Friday with a $13.2 million projected take during its third weekend of release.

In its first week in the box office, the thriller "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" comes in at number 2 grossing $3.5 million on Friday. The Michael J. Basset directed movie is estimated to take in $9.4 million.

Filling out the top five at the box office in earmarked earnings are the just-released Tom Hanks and Halle Berry starring drama/mystery "Cloud Atlas" ($10.2 million), followed by last weekend's top earner "Paranormal Activity 4" ($9.1 million) in fourth and the Olivier Megaton directed crime drama "Taken 2" rounding out the list in fifth ($8.2 million).
