Slim tells Mixtape Daily about his new release, featuring Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar.
By Rob Markman

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables
Mixtape: War Music
Headliner: Slim the Mobster Key Cameos: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar Essential Info: When it comes to finding raw hip-hop talent, Dr. Dre's ear is golden. The architect behind N.W.A's groundbreaking sound went on to discover the likes of Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Game and, more recently, Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster. On his new mixtape, War Music, Slim, representing L.A., looks to keep the Good Doctor's streak of picking talent going strong.
The Aftermath Psychopath gets off to a good start on "Dreaming," featuring Nikki Grier. On the soulful track, Slim contemplates the consequences of his street past in the face of his newfound rap success. "I'm followed by these demons/ Forgive me for living like that/ Even when I'm dreaming/ The streets keep pulling me back," he raps on the song's hook.
"I like this record because it talks about how, us as young artists, we work, and there is always something from our past — like, if you're really in the street, then it's something that will always hold you back," he explained.
Kendrick Lamar shows up on "Whose House," "What Goes Up" features Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep's Prodigy gets busy on "Martyr," and Dr. Dre makes a key appearance on "Back Against the Wall." On the cut, Dre spits a spirited verse as he rhymes, "Now I'ma do this like my life depended on it/ My kids and my wife depended on it," making it clear he's still hungry. A lot of Slim's material is murderous, but there is a message. Songs like the shooter's ode "Gun Play" are balanced out by cautionary tales such as "South Central Blues."
On "See It," Slim gets lyrical, intertwining his bars with a vocal sample, noting that the materialistic images rappers often put in their music aren't always their reality. "It's a lot of different things goin' on in music, and some of us don't really paint vivid pictures, and I thought this record was kind of vivid," he said. "What I was talking about, you could really understand what I'm saying and, more so, you can see it."

Patrice O'Neal has died at age 41.
The news of his death was was confirmed by his co-star on "The Opie & Anthony Show." The comedian and radio personality suffered a stroke back in October.
O'Neal was best known for his work as a stand-up comedian but also appeared in several films like "25th Hour," "Scary Movie 4" and "Furry Vengeance." In addition to being a regular guest on Opie and Anthony's show, he also made multiple appearances on "Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn," "Chappelle's Show" and "The Office."
Click for photos from the life and career of Patrice O'Neal.
Just this past September, he was one of the many comedians who poked fun at Charlie Sheen during his "Comedy Central Roast." He also hosted VH1's "Web Junk 2.0" back in 2006. Earlier this year, his Comedy Central special "Elephant in the Room" premiered on the network.
For those who knew him best, it was his bigger-than-life personality that will be missed most. "Yes it's true that our pal Patrice O'Neal has passed away," Opie, a.k.a. Gregg Hughes, tweeted. "The funniest and best thinker i've ever known PERIOD. #devastated." He then tweeted out a link to a video of the late comedian laughing on the radio show, simply adding, "Patrice O'Neal Greatest Laugh EVER."
Born in Boston on December 7, 1969, O'Neal got his start on the stage and in the early '90s and moved to Los Angeles to shoot for the big leagues. Eventually, his stand-up career resulted in smaller roles in films, as well as the HBO comedy special "One Night Stand." He had been living in the New York area at the time of his death.
The New York Daily News reports that O'Neal died Monday night. Shortly after his October stroke, his friend and fellow comedian Jim Norton opened up about his condition on the radio. "We don't know how he is. We don't know how he's going to be," Norton said. "I didn't want to do this by myself. I wish we had more news for you."

'Twilight' flick blew past 'The Muppets,' but faces formidable holiday-movie competition in the coming weeks.

The box-office battle of Thanksgiving weekend has come and gone, and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" once again emerged as the victor.
The penultimate entry in the vampire romance series pulled off an impressive haul of an estimated $62.3 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. The weekend brought the film's domestic total to roughly $221 million, as it survived formidable competition from "The Muppets," which earned a respectable $42 million.
But what do the upcoming weeks hold for "Breaking Dawn - Part 1"? We consulted some box-office experts to find out.
One of the biggest questions right now for "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is whether it will continue to dominate the box office for a third week in a row. With only "Shame" — a small indie film by comparison — opening next week, the stage is set for another rematch between "Breaking Dawn" and "The Muppets." Phil Contrino from Boxoffice.com said there is some potential for growth in the case of "The Muppets."
"It'll be close between ['Breaking Dawn - Part 1'] and 'The Muppets,' because ['The Muppets'] has much better word of mouth," he said, but he indicated that it was too soon to say which would come out on top.
Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations, on the other hand, sees the weekend going to "The Muppets." The fight for second place will be between "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and "Hugo," he said.
" 'Breaking Dawn' is performing almost identically to 'New Moon' and will likely dip another 60 to 65 percent next weekend and gross $14 million to 16 million," Bock said. "That probably won't keep it at #1, as family films hold exceptionally well during the holiday season. That means 'The Muppets' will jump to #1, and depending on how many screens 'Hugo' jumps to, it may be in a fight for second place."
Both Bock and Contrino expect "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" to finish its domestic run in the range of $300 million but say that we should expect a steep drop-off once more holiday films like "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" hit theaters.
"It's still going to fall fast," Contrino said. "By the time 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' and 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' hit, the audience will have almost entirely disappeared."

'Twilight' flick stays on top, besting family fare including 'Muppets,' 'Hugo.'

The re-emergence of Kermit and his pals wasn't enough to knock Bella Swan and her new husband off the box-office throne. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" remained the #1 movie in America over the long holiday weekend as the romantic vampires-and-werewolves flick fended off competition from PG-rated newcomers "Arthur Christmas" and "Hugo."
The second-to-last "Twilight" movie generated an additional $62.3 million from Wednesday to Sunday for an overall domestic total of $221.3 million, according to estimates released by Summit Entertainment. Despite suffering from the same critical drubbing typically inflicted upon "Twilight" movies, "Breaking Dawn" triumphed against a trio of well-reviewed flicks with broad family appeal.
Comedic actor Jason Segel's "Muppets" debuted with $42 million over the five-day period. The celebrity-cameo-filled revival of the beloved television and movie franchise opened much more strongly than previous Muppet movies. Even with adjustments for ticket-price inflation, the newest "Muppets" overtook 1996's "Muppet Treasure Island," the previous series' strongest box-office debut. The reboot of sorts was a labor of love for co-writer and star Segel, who made his adoration for felt puppets clear in 2008's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
"Happy Feet 2" was the #3 movie over the weekend. But with a production budget nearly triple that of "The Muppets," the animated sequel's $44 million gross ($18.5 million of which was collected over the weekend) couldn't keep the Australian digital production facility that worked on the movie from laying off 600 of its 700 employees, according to a report from Australian film news site if.com.au.
"Arthur Christmas" opened far behind "The Muppets" at #4 with just $17 million. The 3-D movie, from the British animation house behind "Wallace & Gromit," cost Sony Pictures an estimated $100 million to produce. Aardman Animations' "Flushed Away" and "Chicken Run" earned more in their respective three-day opening weekends than the five-day total for their latest movie.
Despite playing on 2,000 fewer screens than "Arthur Christmas," Martin Scorsese's live-action 3-D love letter to classic cinema, "Hugo," was #5 with $15.4 million. The filmmaker best known for violent adult dramas like "Goodfellas" based his first foray into family fare on the popular children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." Roughly 75 percent of the film's grosses were reportedly from pricier 3-D screenings, according to Paramount. "Hugo" played at 1277 venues and is scheduled to expand to 2000 on December 9.
The weekend wasn't without Oscar-bait dramas for adults. The Weinstein Company's "My Week With Marilyn" made $2 million in 244 theaters while the company's black-and-white silent film, "The Artist," made $210,000 in just four New York and Los Angeles theaters.
The box office was down 12 percent overall from the same period last year, when "Tangled" was new in theaters against a "Harry Potter" movie and "MegaMind." "Tangled" was #1 with $68.7 million compared to the $62.3 million made by "Breaking Dawn."

'Toxic' and 'Oops! I Did It Again' sail into round two, while 'Sometimes' and 'I Wanna Go' are early casualties.

After a surprisingly tight race among the 30 Britney Spears music videos in the first round of MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years, we are now down to 16 candidates for her best video of all time!
Perez Hilton and Jordan Miller of Britney fansite BreatheHeavy.com helped the MTV News correspondents weigh in on the first round, which saw the surprising and merciless elimination of the classic "Sometimes" and the newer hit "I Wanna Go."
"I think that 'I Wanna Go' is one of Britney's all-time best videos," Perez said of the clip, which was defeated by her even newer video for "Criminal," co-starring real-life boyfriend Jason Trawick. "I like the 'Criminal' video; I don't love it."
Meanwhile, some videos were huge leaders early on, like "Toxic," "Oops! I Did It Again," "I'm a Slave 4 U," "Me Against the Music" and early "TRL"-era hit "(You Drive Me) Crazy."
The race between "Lucky" and "Boys" was a closer call than MTV News expected, with only a 7 percent margin between the two videos; "Lucky" was the eventual winner. Another interesting twist was the dark "My Prerogative" clip's triumph over the happy-go-lucky vibe of "Sometimes."
With 16 videos left, the race gets much tighter. Now, Britney's most epic and most-celebrated videos will be up against each other. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" will take on the double-pop queen-powered "Me Against the Music," featuring Madonna, while Britney's first video, " ... Baby One More Time," takes on her most recent clip, "Criminal."
"Till the World Ends" and "Piece of Me," which had byes in the first round, are no longer safe, as they are pitted against "My Prerogative" and "Hold It Against Me," respectively, in round two, which closes at 11:59 p.m. Sunday. The Elite Eight will be announced at 7 a.m. Monday. Help your favorite videos win by voting as many times as you can and campaigning.

'I feel lucky to be a songwriter that has an open mind to all different kinds of music,' frontman Aaron Bruno says of Megalithic Symphony.
By Rya Backer
AWOLNATION's Aaron Bruno
Photo: MTV News
AWOLNATION may be a play on frontman Aaron Bruno's childhood nickname, but according to him, it's far from a solo project.
"It's my vision, I suppose, but it's sort of uncomfortable for me to take full responsibility for it, because nothing is possible without the support of a team of people," said Bruno, formerly of such rock acts as Under the Influence of Giants and Hometown Hero.
Still, he remains instrumental in crafting the style-bending and -defying melodies, hooks and choruses featured throughout the group's debut album, Megalithic Symphony (listen to his singles, "Not Your Fault" and "Sail," for perfect takes on pop-punk and prog industrial, respectively).
"I feel lucky to be a songwriter that has an open mind to all different kinds of music," Bruno said. "So I think because of that, I was able to make a record that is genre-less, and I'm very proud to not be able to tell you that it's an alternative record or only a rock record, et cetera. ... I'm just a huge music nerd/fan at the end of the day."
But how did they come up with that name? "I went with the name AWOL, because I've always enjoyed the option of leaving social circumstances without having to explain myself," Bruno said. Less straightforward, however, is Bruno's songwriting. "It's important to me that people interpret the lyrics and the concept and the message for their own and not read too much into it literally. Because a lot of the lyrics are metaphors for life situations that I've been in, and I encourage people to create their own meaning for it out of it all."
Regardless of how the songs are taken in, Bruno is sincere in hoping whatever message is delivered holds meaning to the listener. His one great hope for Megalithic Symphony? "Hopefully this record that I've made helps people through the struggles of life or helps them through the good times."

Radioactive MC recruits Kid Rock and DJ Kool Herc for clip.

Yelawolf on the set of his "Let's Roll" video
Photo: MTV News
Yelawolf might rep Gadsden, Alabama, to the fullest, but for his next music video, Catfish Billy takes a pilgrimage to hip-hop's birthplace. For "Let's Roll," the next single off his debut LP, Radioactive, Yela hooks up with Kid Rock and hip-hop's inventor DJ Kool Herc for a ride through the Bronx, New York.
"We had the godfather, Kool Herc, come out and do a cameo — it's pretty incredible," Yela told MTV News while on set last week. "The director had the brilliant idea of bringing us to the Bronx, the home of hip-hop, where it was born, and it just made it mean so much more to me. I was like, 'Ahh, that's perfect.' "
While coming up in the rap game, Wolf has differentiated himself, playing up not only his southern roots, but the fact that he's a white rapper who at times looks more punk rock than hip-hop. But being from Gadsden doesn't make him any less authentic. In fact, in the "Let's Roll" clip, Wolf brings a trailer-park vibe to the Boogie Down Bronx.
"For me, being from Alabama, what hip-hop has given to me, bringing it back here and the blessing of it and just having Kool Herc out here, it's magic," Yela reflected.
When it's all said and done, Yelawolf expects the video will help define his career. "It's just one of those days that things came together the way they came together, and it'll be a pivotal video in my career," he said. "I know it's gonna really open up a huge door and open a lot of people up to the music."

Critics are overwhelmingly happy with the big-screen reboot featuring Kermit and the gang.

It's time to play the music. It's time to light the lights. It's time to meet "The Muppets" for the first time in over 10 years. Everyone's favorite felt friends are back in a big-screen reboot brought to life mostly on behalf of the hard work of lifelong Muppet fan Jason Segel.
The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. (You can see our own rave here.) Critics have praised the return of the Muppets as fun, warm, family-friendly fare, true to the characters and the fans who have loved them for decades.
Check out our roundup of the reviews.
The Story
"A clever idea holds this reboot together, as simple as making one brother (Gary, played by Segel) human and the other (Walter, voiced by Peter Linz) a Muppet in love with the Muppets legacy. (He sports a Kermit wristwatch.) The locale is Smalltown, USA, which Gary and Walter introduce to us in the opening number, 'Life's a Happy Song.' Gary, his schoolteacher sweetheart Mary (Amy Adams) and Walter journey to Los Angeles for a vacation. Touring the old Muppet Studios facility, the trio learn of the plan to raze the historically significant and sentimentally priceless structure. There's oil under the ground, see, and the weaselly millionaire (Chris Cooper) after it doesn't give a Gonzo's patoot about nostalgia. To preserve the old homestead the visitors must gather together the Muppets from various locales and raise $10 million in a save-the-Muppets telethon." — Michael Phillips, The Chicago Tribune
The Songs
"The setup works like a charm. So do the songs, with several new ones by ["Flight of the Conchords"] star Bret McKenzie. Adams rocks out on 'Me Party.' And Segel's heartfelt ballad 'Man or Muppet?' deserves Academy attention as the movie song of the year." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
The Comeback
"As a theatrical troupe, the Muppets haven't exactly been AWOL these past dozen years; the gang rocked YouTube in 2009 with their kick-ass rendition of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' But they've certainly been lying low while our twitchy, tweet-y times have favored snarkier, more air-quote-driven entertainment, even from puppets. And in a way, that showbiz hiatus has worked in favor of The Muppets. For adults, the movie's gentle, clever, unironic humor feels freshly, trendily retro now, enhanced by laughs provided in cameos from a very up-to-date roster of stars." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
The Muppets
"These are the same old, adorable Muppets, as sweetly innocent and likable as ever. Winking at itself, the movie is casually, amusingly self-reflexive. In one joke Kermit the Frog considers telephoning President Carter. 'The Muppets' makes no attempt to match the wisecracking hipness of the 'Shrek' movies. If it doesn't provoke belly laughs, it elicits many affectionate chuckles." — Stephen Holden, The New York Times
The Final Word
"The remarkable thing about the Muppets, then and now, is what distinctive personalities and presences they have. When 'The Muppet Movie,' the first in the series, came out in 1979, there was astonishment that — ohmigod! — Kermit was riding a bicycle! How could a Muppet do that? Today, characters can do anything in the movies, but these Muppets are still played by Muppeteers, and they're still endearing." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

In the midst of a leisurely holiday weekend, Gerard Butler was spotted enjoying himself in West Hollywood, CA on Saturday afternoon (November 26).
The "Bounty Hunter" hunk looked cool and casual in a longsleeve grey top with distressed jeans and sneakers as he joined a few friends for lunch at a patio table outside Fred Segal's Mauro Cafe.
Once finished up with the Thanksgiving weekend meal, Butler tried to sneak through the back door of the Melrose locale to no avail - as paparazzi were ready and waiting to snap up shots upon the Hollywood actor's exit.
The outing comes as 42-year-old Gerard recently spoke with press about his plans to avoid any future flings with his co-stars, as he explained, "That's a dangerous path. When you're making a film with someone, you get to know them very well indeed and it's too easy to develop a sort of obsession with them that you think at the time might be love. But it isn't. Earlier in my career, I had a couple of relationships with co-stars and both times it was a disaster."

Critics call RiRi's sixth album 'often great' and 'relentlessly catchy.'
By John Mitchell

Rihanna's much-anticipated Talk That Talk hit stores Monday on a wave of near-universal praise from critics. The album, which can already claim the #1 song in the country, "We Found Love" featuring Calvin Harris, is earning the Barbadian pop superstar the best reviews of her commercially massive career.
MTV News' James Montgomery already declared Talk That Talk "not only the best effort of her career, but arguably the best pop album of 2011," an assessment echoed by the New York Times, People, Rolling Stone and SPIN.
"The best songs on this lively and often great album sound synth-perfect for that time [the early 1990s]. 'We Found Love' almost criminally recalls the swinging Crystal Waters singles, with triumphant percussion somewhere between church and seventh-inning stretch," the Times writes. " 'Where Have You Been' is even better, with hard, chilly synths, snares from the poppier side of house music, and Rihanna moving in and out of a curled Siouxsie Sioux tone."
In a three-and-a-half -star review (out of four), People calls Talk That Talk "one of 2011's best pop-diva statements," while Spin awards the set an 8 out of 10, complimenting the "occasionally perfect pop" songs on the record and noting the set is easily Rihanna's most cohesive to date.
Rolling Stone also notes that Talk is far more than a collection of singles. "Rihanna's sixth album is her tightest, most assured yet — a relentlessly catchy and danceable pop album, with first-rate contributions from top songwriter-producers," the magazine writes.
Many critics also seem pleased that the pop star is moving away from the darker, brooding material that marked her last two records, Rated R and Loud. Those albums appeared to be heavily influenced by her troubled relationship with Chris Brown, and, as noted in Entertainment Weekly's B-plus review, often "equated falling for someone with feeling tortured."
On Talk, RiRi instead approaches the topics of love and sex — the album's principal themes — with a less-heavy hand, even admitting on "Roc Me Out": "I'll let you in on a dirty secret/ I just want to be loved."
While the album is mostly earning raves, Pitchfork had a few complaints — mostly that the brief set (the 11-track album clocks in at a mere 38 minutes) never fully realizes its potential.
In its summation of the album, Billboard calls Talk "a fleshed-out statement that captures Rihanna's relentless drive and will likely keep her on top. This album's not a victory lap; it's a whole new race."
Whether the mostly stellar reviews will translate into strong sales for Rihanna, who set a Billboard chart record by racking up 20 Top-10 singles faster than any solo artist, with "We Found Love," remains to be seen.

Avril Lavigne will join the likes of Cee Lo Green, "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" star Daniel Radcliffe, Mary J. Blige and Cobra Starship for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, airing live, as you might expect, on Turkey Day Thursday. The Goodbye Lullaby singer stopped by the MTV News offices to tease fans about what to expect from her come show day.
"I'm going to be performing on a float and singing my new single 'Wish You Were Here,' and I am planning on being very bundled up," she said, laughing. "And I've never performed in a parade before. Actually, I've been in a parade: I used to be a highland dancer in my hometown growing up, so I did stuff like that.
"I'm singing full on on a float — it's gonna be cool," she added. "New York right now, it's so pretty, and everyone's super getting into the holiday season, so I'm excited. I'm really happy to be a part of it."
A native Canadian, Lavigne already celebrated her country's Thanksgiving last month, but loves the chance to double up on the holiday once November rolls around.
"I'm Canadian, and our Canadian Thanksgiving is a month before yours," she said. "But I live here [in the U.S.], so I celebrate both. I do Thanksgiving twice a year, and it really depends on where I'm traveling and where I'm at, but I'm going to celebrate it this year, and I'm in the States. And I was with my family in Canada this year [for Canadian Thanksgiving], and we're gonna definitely do the whole friends and family sit-down, pig-out Thanksgiving."
Lavigne shared some dishes she likes to fill up on: "I like the potatoes. I like doing squash. If I ever cook it, I like doing butternut squash with rosemary. Sometimes you put brown sugar on it, if you want to be bad, and maple syrup, if you really want to be really bad. Butternut squash and stuffing."

Drake has a lot to be thankful for this week. His sophomore LP, Take Care, officially debuts in the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart Wednesday (November 23). "I can't even find the words to express my appreciation. ... 'Thank you and I owe you' is all that comes to mind ... truly," Drizzy tweeted Tuesday night in reaction to the news.
SoundScan tallies that Drizzy pushed over 631,000 copies of the album, which was released on November 15. It was forecasted that the Young Money soldier would sell as many as 700,000 copies, but he fell just south of that, not that he or anyone at his label is sweating over sales. YM CEO Lil Wayne told MTV News that he was more concerned with how Take Care is received critically.
"Pardon me for sounding however I sound with this statement, but we rich as sh--, so numbers and record sales, that doesn't matter to none of us," Wayne said. "We just want to get a perfect point across, a swell opinion across."
Michael Bublé's Christmas lands at #2, leading the pack of other holiday albums including Justin Bieber's Under the Mistletoe (#5) and Glee: The Music, the Christmas Album, Vol. 2 (#6). Adele's 21 continues its reign, moving another 112,000 units this week, easily putting the U.K. singer in the #3 position. Andrea Bocelli's Concerto: One Night in Central Park debuts in the #4 slot, while Now 40, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto, the "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" soundtrack and Susan Boyle's Someone to Watch Over Me round out the top 10.
Childish Gambino also scores a huge win in his first week, selling 52,000 copies of Camp, but last week's top album, Blue Slide Park by Mac Miller, slides down to #24, selling another 25,000 copies independently.
